Nails for a grey dress

Grey takes almost anything. Silver and milky white stay cool, while pink, burgundy or blue add the color the dress does not have.

How to match nails to an outfit

There are three reliable ways to pair nails with clothes. The first is a neutral: nude, milky white or a sheer pink goes with every dress and never competes with it. The second is a match, where the polish sits in the same color family as the outfit, a shade lighter or darker. The third is a contrast, where the nails are the one bold thing, like red nails with a black dress.

If the outfit already has a pattern, sequins or a bright color, a neutral is usually the safest choice. If the outfit is plain, nails are a good place to add color. Metallics such as silver and gold follow your jewelry: wear the same metal on your nails as on your hands. For more ideas by occasion, open the Nail Matcher or browse outfit matching nails.

Quick answers by dress color

A black dress takes almost anything: classic red, milky white or a deep burgundy all look deliberate. With a red dress, keep nails neutral or match the red exactly, because a second bright color competes. Navy pairs well with silver, nude and milky white. Green looks rich with gold, nude or burgundy. For a white dress, nude and soft pink keep the look fresh, and for pink or yellow a milky white is the easy choice.

Length and shape matter less than color, but shorter nails in a deep shade read as classic, while longer nails in the same shade read as dramatic.
